An unused fireplace can become the so-called elephant in the room, unless you’re willing to do something about it. When decorating for this area, there are other great options besides the typical imitation firewood logs. Let’s look at three ways to decorate a fireplace to bring it back to life.
1. Take a Natural Approach
Bringing nature inside is one of my favorite things to do when decorating a space. And the fireplace is no exception. Here, I’ve placed different sized plants inside baskets, making sure that most of the opening of the fireplace is covered. Since I’m already decorating for fall, some pumpkins are also added to enhance the décor.

2. Add Glassware
Glassware can be a stylish addition to your hearth. Whether you’re the proud owner of a big collection or just have a few choice pieces, showing off your big recycled glass vases will make the fireplace area look brighter, while helping to hide the back. Try pairing your glass goods in sets of odd numbers to make the space more appealing and memorable.

3. Get Creative with Candlelight
Another great idea is to create an intimate atmosphere with candles. They don’t have to be real, since battery-operated candles will work wonders (and if they have a timer, even better) while duplicating the same ambiance. At HomeGoods, I found four battery-operated candles in varying sizes, along with some wooded candle holders and lanterns.

While preparing this arrangement, I added small piles of books to create a soft transition of heights between each of the elements.

When all the candles are lit, the opening seems to glow with a warm and welcoming light, just like it would with real firewood!

While there are many ways to decorate your fireplace, remember to keep the changing seasons in mind when redesigning the space. These seasonal transitions can help you when selecting accessories for the area.
